Episode 18 : Joining Unit

Welcome back to the ExQISSite Quilt! This is the episode we’ve all been waiting for—the grand assembly. In episode 18, we are joining our large, quilted units together to reveal the beautiful centre of our quilt.
In this episode, I’ll guide you through:
  • The final placement of all the different sashings and why it’s okay to change your mind to balance your colours.
  • My process for measuring your large panels in three places to ensure your quilt stays perfectly square before you join them.
  • Tips for pinning and sewing long spacer strips, including how to ease in any fullness for a perfectly flat finish.
  • How to make a brand-new “bowtie” triangle sashing, designed specifically for joining the main sections of the quilt.
  • Preparing the sashings for the outside of the quilt and an important tip on the correct order for attaching your final borders.
  • Top Tip: Before joining your large units, measure their length in three places: down both sides and through the centre.
  • If the measurements differ, trim the unit square before you sew. This single step is the key to preventing a wavy quilt and ensuring a professional finish!
  • I am so delighted with the photos you are sending in. Remember, your quilt is your own masterpiece, so don’t be afraid to make it your own!
  • Don’t forget to download the notes from our website, and check for the full photo of my quilt layout at the end of this video to see how it all comes together.
Join us for the next episode, where we will tackle the final frame for our quilt: the borders! We’ll cover everything from choosing widths and quilting designs to attaching them perfectly.
