Quilt As You Go Handbook — by Pauline Rogers

The Quilt As You Go Handbook is a 62-page spiral-bound guide written by Pauline Rogers, filled with vivid colour photos and step-by-step instructions. It teaches you to quilt your own quilts on a standard domestic sewing machine — one block at a time.

What is Quilt As You Go?

Quilt As You Go (QAYG) means quilting each block individually — top, batting and backing — before joining the finished blocks together. Instead of wrestling a full-size quilt through the narrow throat of a home machine, you only ever handle one small block at a time. It’s the reason so many quilters finish their own quilts instead of sending them out to a longarmer.

The two QAYG methods in this book

Between the Blocks — blocks are joined with a sashing strip that sits between them, front and back. This gives a defined lattice across the quilt top and a clean, deliberate finish on the reverse.

Back to Back — blocks are joined edge to edge with no sashing showing on the front. Use this when you want an unbroken quilt top and the block seams to disappear into the design.

Both methods are shown in full with photographed steps, measurements and Pauline’s tips for keeping blocks square and seams flat.

Who this book is for

The QAYG Handbook is written specifically to be easy to understand, so beginners can give quilting a go without a class or a longarm machine. Experienced quilters use it as a reference for sashing options, joining sequences and finishing.

What’s the difference between Between the Blocks and Back to Back? Between the Blocks shows a sashing strip between each block; Back to Back joins blocks with no sashing visible on the quilt top. Both are covered in full.
